Door Step School, which provides education to underprivileged children at various locations in Mumbai and Pune, and which runs the School on Wheels program for the children of migrant construction workers, has inaugurated a new School on Wheels bus in Pune. The bus, which is kitted-out as a classroom, complete with audio-visual equipment, offers space to 20-25 children.
This bus was donated to the Door Step School by Springer Science+Business Media, the parent company of Crest Premedia Solutions (Private) Ltd, which has been operational in Pune since 2007. The close relationship between Springer, Crest and the Door Step School came about in 2007, when Springer was looking for a local NGO partner for the volunteering part of the Cross-Cultural Internship Program for publishing production trainees from Germany and the Netherlands who come to train at Crest for several months. As a formal part of their traineeship, these young people spend two weeks volunteering with the staff and children at the Door Step School, and over the years, many of them, and other Springer and Crest employees, have become very involved with the valuable work that the Door Step School does.
In 2008, Springer had already taken up a 3-year sponsorship of a School on Wheels bus, which covered the running costs of the bus, including the driver, as well as the costs associated with the teaching staff and supplies. The new bus has been donated to celebrate the 5-year existence of the Cross-Cultural Internship Program and adds to the fleet of six School on Wheels buses that Door Step School uses in Mumbai and Pune.
“We are not only pleased to be able to provide the Door Step School with an additional, much-needed mobile classroom, we are also very proud of the five years of success of the internship program which provides a wide range of benefits for the interns, for Crest, for Springer, and, of course, for the Door Step School and their dedicated staff. We look forward to many more years of fruitful cooperation,” said Eric Merkel-Sobotta, Executive Vice President Corporate Communications at Springer.
The Door Step School (www.doorstepschool.org) was established in Mumbai, India in 1988 and later expanded to Pune in 1992. Door Step School provides education and support to the often-forgotten children of pavement dwellers, slum dwellers, construction site families and many other underprivileged families. Many of these children are not enrolled in school and have limited access to books and a place to study. Annually, the Door Step School serves more than 50,000 children with literacy programs at over 125 locations in both Mumbai and Pune. Each year more than 1,500 children who would have otherwise gone without a formal education are enrolled in municipal schools.
