Wolfgang Nickel: Studium der Mathematik und Physik mit Abschluß Diplom in Mathematik, anschließend bis 1992 wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Mathematischen Institut der Universität Gießen, 1992 Promotion mit einer Dissertation über die Erweiterung einer in Gießen entwickelten Grafiksoftware auf Probleme der Differentialgeometrie.
