Das Lehrbuch bietet eine leicht zugängliche Einführung in die entscheidungsorientierte Produktionstheorie industrieller Leistungsprozesse. In einem einheitlichen Rahmen behandelt es sowohl wesentliche Modelle und Aussagen der traditionellen Produktions- und Kostentheorie als auch grundlegende Aspekte des Produktionsmanagements. Der system-, prozess- und erfolgsorientierte Ansatz integriert auf organische Weise Gesichtspunkte des Umweltschutzes und bildet so auch eine Grundlage für das betriebliche Umweltmanagement und das industrielle Controlling. Das didaktische Hilfsmittel der Input/Output-Graphen führt zu einer konstruktiven Ausrichtung der Theorie und fördert zudem das Verständnis komplexer, vernetzter Produktionsstrukturen.
