About this book

"Principles of Diabetes Mellitus, Second Edition" is an important update to the comprehensive textbook first published in 2002 and reissued in 2004. It is written for physicians of all specialties who, on a daily basis, deal with an illness which has reached epidemic proportions. The book is also intended for medical students and investigators of all aspects of diabetes.

The last five years have witnessed major developments in our understanding of diabetes and in therapeutic approaches to this disease. Thus, in addition to updating all chapters, the authors added eight new chapters to the second edition. "Principles of Diabetes Mellitus, Second Edition" covers diabetes in all of its aspects – genetics, epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, therapy and prevention.

Reviews

From the reviews of the second edition:

“The purpose of this valuable monograph is to provide up-to-date information on several problems related the acute and chronic problem of diabetes. … This is definitely a monograph of great value for all those who are engaged not in the treatment of diabetes patients, but also in epidemiology of metabolic disorders, obesity as well as for students and primary care physicians, though most of the chapters are written for endocrinologists.” (Endocrine Regulations, January, 2012)

“A basic, updated volume on diabetes starting with the history, glucose physiology, hormones, genetics to diabetes syndromes, complications and therapy. With many tables and illustrations. For adult diabetologists and general practitioners.” (Pediatric Endocrinology Reviews (PER), Vol. 8 (3), March, 2011)

“Doctors in every specialty see patients with diabetes mellitus, and medical students need to understand the disease and how to manage it. Hence this text, now in its second edition (seven years after initial publication), with chapters written to stand on their own … and plenty of features to help students rapidly integrate the material. … for this new edition every chapter has been updated and new chapters have been added … .” (SciTech Book News, December, 2010)

“This textbook on diabetes mellitus edited by Leonid Poretsky is explicitly designed for medical students and nonendocrinologist physicians … . The inclusion of Internet resources in addition to traditional references to books and journal articles is appealing, particularly for medical students. … a number of more detailed chapters are dedicated to the clinical picture of diabetes—its complications, associated diseases, and treatment. … exceptionally good, and the declared aim of providing a text for medical students and physicians of different specialties has been achieved.” (Edoardo Mannucci, Journal of the American Medical Association, Vol. 304 (14), October, 2010)

“This is an update of a comprehensive overview of the pathogenesis, epidemiology, and genetics of diabetes and its complications originally published about seven years ago. All major topics are covered and each chapter lists Internet resources for additional information in addition to standard references. … written for both endocrinologists and others, including nonendocrine specialists, primary care physicians, housestaff, and medical students. … it also would be appropriate for endocrine trainees. … This is an excellent general textbook of diabetes.” (Ronald N. Cohen, Doody’s Book Reviews, August, 2010)

“It contains about all that anyone might want to know about diabetes and has been produced by contributors at the avant-garde of current development. … Although suitable for specialists in endocrinology and other disciplines and subspecialties, its content should be available for every comprehensive therapist for reference. … The individual 40 chapters can stand alone in covering the main aspects of diabetes so the reader can gather full details quickly discussing the history of the disease … and resources for patients with diabetes.” (William H. Wehrmacher and Harry Messmore, Comprehensive Therapy, Fall, 2010)
